Paste or type your text to see how many characters you have used and how many are left. Choose what you are writing first, because Instagram uses a different limit for captions, bios and usernames.
Instagram character limits
| Field | Limit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Caption | 2,200 characters | up to 20 accounts tagged with @ (Meta documentation) |
| Bio | 150 characters | line breaks count as characters |
| Username | 30 characters | letters, numbers, periods and underscores only |
How the counter counts
Every letter, space, line break and emoji counts. The counter treats each emoji and each symbol as one character. Some emoji, such as flags or skin tones, are built from several characters and can count as more than one on Instagram, so leave a little room if you use many of them.
Tips for captions and bios
- Put the most important words at the start of the caption. Instagram shows only the beginning of a long caption before the more link.
- Use short lines in your bio. To keep empty lines, run the text through our line break generator.
- Ask a question at the end of a caption to invite comments.
